Oregon hockey falls 5-1 to Utah in Pac-8 Championship
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Recaps, University of OregonIn the Pac-8 Championship, No. 3 Oregon hockey fell to No. 1 Utah, 5-1. Both teams were evenly matched at 5-on-5 play, but frequent penalties cost the Ducks the opportunity to pull ahead. Of the 47 penalties in the game, 31 of them belonged to Oregon. There were 134 penalty minutes total.
Danny Cockriel ends final year of Ducks hockey after four years as starting goaltender
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Stories & Features, University of OregonEngulfed in a snowsuit and padded with his helmet and gloves, a three-year-old, purple-cheeked Danny Cockriel waddled onto ice for the first time at his local rink in Englewood, Colorado. Cockriel was a member of the Learn to Skate program and he, like the other members, fell. A lot.
Every time he hit the ice, he’d look up at his mom and she’d run to the glass shouting, “Danny! Danny! Do you want to sit out?” Every time, his response was to shake his head ‘no.’ Every time, he’d continue on.
Weekend recap: Oregon hockey finishes final two games of regular season 12-4, 15-1
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Recaps, University of OregonThe Oregon club hockey team finished their regular season this weekend with two back-to-back games against the Washington State Cougars. Oregon, with triple the number of players on the bench as Washington, took away both games with landslide victories of 12-4 and 15-1.
Oregon hockey gearing up to #TakeBackTheCup
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Stories & Features, University of OregonFriday, Oct. 17, the Ducks hockey team will face Washington, the team’s biggest rival in the league, in the home opener at Lane Events Center. Each year, both teams square off in a brutal four-game series for the I-5 Cup.
Last year, Washington won in a shootout after splitting the series 2-2. The year before, Oregon took it home for the first time in four years after an overtime victory.
“We don’t play Oregon State in hockey,” senior goaltender Trevor Peterson said. “This is really our biggest rival. We have the I-5 Cup and that’s our thing, our big game.”
Unsatisfied with its brief time with the cup, the team has spent the last month releasing Youtube videos with the hashtag #TakeBackTheCup to pump up fans, and themselves, for the start of the regular season.
Ducks hockey falls 5-1 against ASU, eliminated from Pac-8 tournament
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Recaps, University of OregonAfter a 5-2 victory against UCLA the night prior, the three seed Oregon club hockey team took on the top seeded No. 15 Arizona State University Sun Devils where they fell 5-1. The loss meant elimination for the Oregon Ducks as ASU moved on to the Pac-8 Championship against the reigning champs, the No. 5 Utah Utes.
Ducks hockey beats UCLA 5-2, will face ASU for spot in Pac-8 Championship
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Recaps, University of OregonThree seed Oregon took on six seed UCLA for the first game of the Pac-8 playoffs held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Ducks emerged victorious with a 5-2 win over the Bruins.
The win over the Bruins means that the Ducks will be facing the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils, the top seed in Pool B, tomorrow night for a spot in the Pac-8 Championship, where the Ducks had fallen to Utah the year prior.
Ducks hockey splits Washington series, loses I-5 Cup in shootout
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Recaps, University of OregonIt was a rough night at the Lane County Ice Center for Oregon club hockey.
After losing 3-2 in an extremely penalty-riddled Game 4, thereby splitting the four-game series, Oregon and Washington turned to a five-man shootout to determine who would ultimately take home the I-5 Cup.
Oregon hockey takes lead in I-5 Cup series with 1-0 shutout win at home
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Recaps, University of OregonFriday night’s game—which gave the Oregon club hockey team a 2-1 lead in the series against the University of Washington—didn’t fit the typical mold of I-5 Cup games. Usually the games between the two rival hockey clubs are fast-paced, with both teams having piles of penalties along with a few points each on the board.
This game, the third game of the series, was the reverse.
Trevor Peterson makes the jump from roller hockey to ice
Daily Emerald, Hockey, Stories & Features, University of OregonWhen you ask an ice hockey player where he learned to play, the answer is rarely Nipomo, Calif.
The reason? There’s no place to play.
Many ice hockey hopefuls had to head to other cities like Bakersfield or Oxnard, both two hours away.
But senior Trevor Peterson — now a goaltender for the Oregon club ice hockey team — didn’t start on ice skates. He began on roller blades.
